Visiting the Archives

What should I expect upon my first reasearch research visit?

  1. Researchers are required to present identification (campus ID, California driver's license or other valid identification) to use the materials.

  2. To obtain files, a Reader Registration Form must be completed upon your first visit.

  3. The materials do not circulate outside the Reading Room.

  4. Books, book bags, briefcases, purses or other large personal items must be placed under the desk while research is conducted.

  5. Bring pencils and paper only; there are no pens allowed when using the materials.

  6. 6. Bring plenty of change (5 cents per page) and at least one $1.00 bill to obtain a copy card for the copy machine. We cannot make change.

  7. Laptop outlet capability is available - please specify if you will need it when scheduling your appointment, as outlets are limited.

  8. The Federal collection is divided by congressional terms (every two years). The State collection is arranged per annum, except for the Election files. Both are categorized by topics and subtopics. Please keep this in mind when requesting files. A list of general topics addressed in the collection is located under the CONTENT SCOPE and CONTENT NOTE portions of the Finding Guide.

  9. There is no eating or drinking permitted (unless in a pop-top bottle) in the Reading Room. A café room is located on campus in the Bell Tower, first floor.
